Business Foundation Certificate at London Guildhall University

This course is designed to prepare you for level 1 study on a degree or HND course in accounting, banking, business, human resource management, economics, finance, management, marketing, leisure and tourism. It has been designed for those students who have completed their study at A2/AVCE level, but who have not achieved the grades necessary for direct undergraduate entry. Successful completion of the course guarantees you a place on a range of HND and degree courses at London Metropolitan University (starting in September or February each year).

Course structure

The course comprises three modules:
Contemporary Issues in Business- this makes you aware of how topical issues in business can be researched through a variety of media.
Extensive use is made of case study material and topical articles from the press and other media. As well as making you familiar with debates in
the area of business, this module will help you appreciate the different
subject areas available for f urther study
Handling Numerical Data- this enables you to develop your skills in analysing numerical data, so that conclusions can be drawn and decisions made
Research and Study Skills- this develops your skills in research, critical assessment, and analysis of source material and communication of results to an academic audience in both written and oral form

Teaching, learning and assessment

Methods used include lectures, case studies and seminars, which involve discussions, teamwork and problem-solving exercises. You will also be given the opportunity for wider reading and individual research. Assessments are intended to enhance your understanding of the subject and prepare you for the range of assessments you can expect on future HND and degree courses. Methods include portfolios of coursework, reports, presentations, unseen examinations and projects.

Career opportunities

Successful students can continue with their studies on an HND or degree programme in business or related subjects.

The Major equips students with the professional skills in: accounting, banking and finance, management information systems, economics, and management and marketing; enabling graduates to find entry-level jobs in the world of business, finance, and government. The Program also serves as a rigorous preparation for Graduate study in business administration, and other fields.
