International Studies Degree at Webster University North Florida

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

We live in an interdependent world. Daily headlines, national policies, and regional economics are shaped by people all around the globe. World forces affect our academic choices, career opportunities, and shopping lists — even the water we drink and the air we breathe.

As more businesses and organizations expand globally, we as individuals are going global, too, surfing the Web and e-mailing across the seas to pursue our personal and professional goals.

Following this trend, international studies provides a context for studying social and natural sciences, business and commerce, the humanities, fine arts, and foreign languages within a global context.

An Interdisciplinary Program
Webster’s interdisciplinary International Studies program is designed to give students specialized and general global knowledge, second language skills, and significant international experience.

Each student will complete the core courses, select a second language, and study abroad or complete an internship (as approved by the Director of the Center for International Education).

You can choose to major with an emphasis in either Asia, Latin America or International Human Rights. Or you can work with the CIE Director to develop an individual emphasis in another area of study.

International Affairs Degree at Northeastern University

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

International affairs brings together history, politics, business, religion, and language to help you develop a deep understanding of both regional and global issues. It prepares you to live and function in the interdependent world in which we live, work, compete, and cooperate.

The international affairs curriculum requires courses in history, international conflict and negotiation, comparative politics, and global markets. Students focus on a particular region – Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, or Russia – and also acquire a global perspective through courses like “Globalism, Racism, and Human Rights,” “International Economics,” “Third World Women,” and “Ethics: East and West.” They show their proficiency in a language other than English and have an international experience during their studies - possibly a co-op overseas or study abroad.

International affairs is for those who are able to think broadly and who want to fully partake of the global world in which we live. It prepares students for further study in politics, research, international service, or graduate study in law, diplomacy, or international affairs.

International Relations Major at University Of California Davis

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

In our fast-paced, increasingly interdependent world, the problems and policies of each nation have repercussions that are felt far beyond its borders. Whether the issue is climatic change caused by carbon dioxide emissions or the rights of workers in factories owned by transnational corporations, decision makers in government and industry must now consider how their actions will affect people and places around the globe. As an international relations major, you will draw from a variety of academic disciplines to gain a more complete picture of the issues and traditions that shape regions and nations.
Real World

International relations majors are prepared to embark on exciting careers in many areas related to transnational issues and concerns. Many have found employment with federal government agencies such as the Foreign Service, international or non-governmental organizations such as the United Nations or companies conducting business or finance operations internationally.
Major Requirements

After completing lower-division work in the social sciences and in a foreign language, you will select an emphasis for your advanced study. You may choose to focus on world trade and development; peace and security; global environment, health and natural resources or peoples and nationalities. A Student Perspective

This major has really prepared me for life after college. My classes require quite a bit of reading and processing information, and I know I’ll benefit from all my writing experience. These skills will help me pursue a career in international law.

A Faculty Perspective

A liberal arts major, like international relations, provides students with the building blocks to create their own futures. The key to success in a career or graduate study is having exposure to what you want to do and having the skills to be able to pursue it. A major in international relations provides you with both.
