International Relations Undergraduate at Agnes Scott College

International relations is a study of global affairs that draws upon the connections of economics, politics and history. It applies the contributions of all these disciplines to the study of topics of historical and contemporary importance. Students will examine traditional studies that focus on the role of the nation-state. In addition, they will explore more contemporary insights into the influence of other global factors, such as transnational corporations, diasporas and international organizations whose work spans the globe.

What will I study?
In addition to introductory and upper-level courses in political science and economics, students choose to focus on a particular geographic area in their studies—Europe and Russia, Africa, Asia or Latin America—and they are required to take an additional course beyond the intermediate level in a foreign language.

Quite often the College offers Global Awareness and Global Connections courses that allow students to refine further their understanding of a particular area of the world, or hone their language skills (recent Global Awareness trips went to Japan, Ghana and China, for example). Students also have the opportunity to participate in semester-long and yearlong study abroad programs.

The capstone of the international relations major’s work is the International Relations Senior Seminar, taken in the senior year. The topic changes yearly according to student and instructor interests.

1 Students who opt for the trip must enroll in this study during their last summer before completing their degree. Demand for the program and other factors that affect the scheduling of the study tour may require adjustments to this requirement. In planning the study tour was considered the regions under study of the concentration of students in international trade have opted for a sub in a particular region of the world.

Students who opt for the exchange program must participate in it in its fourth year, this time because they have completed all course requirements and electives will only detract from the concentration and free. As far as possible the student will be required in the concentration of international trade that has opted for a sub in the study of a region of the world to study at any university in this region.

The student can do his internship at a local company if working in an area related to international trade. (The DAE has experience coordinating internal accounting, management and human resources in enterprises.) However, encourage participation in internships abroad especially those who subespecialicen in the study of a region. The program may be channeled HACU applications for internships in the United States.

The prerequisite of the research project will be the course of Research Methods and Techniques in Business Administration, which, in turn, has the prerequisite courses of Statistics I and II. For students wishing to create new businesses and ideas with the potential for the market in its global research project, they also require the course of Business Development. Depending on the magnitude and depth of the research project will allow work in groups. (Departmental Research Committee will coordinate and evaluate research projects.) It will encourage interdisciplinary work.

International negotiations: Analyze the cultural differences in different markets, develop intercultural communication skills, develop strategies and tactics of negotiation, negotiation skills implements.
