International Management Bachelor at Jönköping University College

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

The International Management programme at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) is an education that is adherent to the business world. It gives the student a unique combination of entrepreneurship, internationalization and business renewal. The program aims at providing a holistic perspective on business and a good preparation for professional careers in business environments all around the world.

General goals
The general goals of the program are:
to train future leaders in a holistic approach towards entrepreneurship and business renewal, which implies high theoretical competence combined with good understanding of how to apply theoretical knowledge in practice,
to prepare students for their future careers in international environments,
to encourage critical thinking, reflection and creativity.

Programme structure and content
The International Management programme comprises 180 ECTS credits. This is equivalent to three years of full-time studies or the equivalent of 6 semesters, i.e. 30 ECTS credits per semester. Full-time study at JIBS equals two 7,5 ECTS courses per quarter.
Instruction is largely based on process and problem based learning, i.e. instruction is conducted through applications and problem-solving in seminars, and various projects.

Already during the first semester, the students get the chance to establish contacts with an enterprise through the host company assignment. The host company assignment provides valuable insight into the reality of the business world as well as a unique opportunity to combine theory and practice.

During the third year, students can apply for taking the Project Based Module where each project is defined individually and is based on a real company situation. The objectives of the Problem Based Module are:
to increase the students’ capability to deal with real life problems,
to increase the link between real problems and theoretically based knowledge,
to increase students’ possibility to be employed,
to increase the linkage between industry/business and academia, and/or to increase entrepreneurship by starting up and developing new businesses.

The International Management (IM) programme provides students with the opportunity to create their own individual profile of study. During semester 4 and 5, students can choose between a large number of courses in business administration within subjects such as entrepreneurship, marketing, leadership, accounting and finance at JIBS. In addition, there are courses available in commercial law, economics, economic geography, informatics, language and statistics. Students are encouraged to spend at least one semester abroad (this is done during semester 4 or/and 5) and choose courses that will help to individualise their degree. Towards the end of their studies, students write a mandatory Bachelor thesis in Business Administration of 15 ECTS credits (for a complete description see courses below).

Career Prospects
Because the programme is centred on internationalisation, leadership skills, and a problem-solving approach, graduates from JIBS are well prepared for leadership positions in any business or organisation. Entrepreneurial expertise is becoming increasingly important due to the restructuring of large corporations and public organisations into smaller, relatively self-sustaining businesses. Moreover, the need for highly educated leaders is growing steadily as a result of increased internationalisation in the business world.

Degree title
The programme leads to a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
