Admission MSc International Business at Helsinki School of Economics

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

Following the degree renewal it is no longer possible to study International Business at the Bachelor level.

There are two separate application procedures to enter the Master’s Degree Program in International Business. The first one is through internal application. This route is meant for students who have been selected to complete both B.Sc and M.Sc. degrees at HSE. The other route is through the external application procedure, which is meant for students who have completed their Bachelor’s degree in some other university and are only applying to complete a M.Sc. degree at HSE.

The Master’s Degree Program in International Business has attracted the most applications in recent years. In 2005 37% of all Master’s level applications to the Helsinki School of Economics were for the International Business program. In 2006, 57 students indicated IB as their primary choice and 48 as secondary. In 2007 the respective numbers were 63 and 53. 35 students have been selected each year through the external route. First time in 2008, there will be two Master’s Program tracks: International Business and Internationall Business/CEMS that will be a double degree. The deadline for applying is June 5th 2008.

The application procedures are outlined in the admission guide (link to admission page). Please note that applicants must have excellent English language abilities because the program is conducted completely in English.

About the course
The BA (Hons) Business Management and International Strategic Enterprise degree is distinctive in that it explores how entrepreneurial activities take place in a variety of different organisational contexts. It also considers how notions of entrepreneurship, design, innovation and competitive advantage inter-relate strategically to contribute to organisational and managerial work at an international level.

Assessment
Each module undertaken on the course is assessed in a variety of ways. Examples of assessment include written examinations, reports, essays, individual and group coursework, presentations, and research projects. The degree classification is based on 25% of second year work and 75% of final year work.

Placement and fieldwork opportunities
A period of paid supervised work experience is an integral part of the four-year course, that enables students to put their theoretical knowledge into practice in a real work environment. This enhances both commercial awareness and ability to link theory to practice in the final year of study.
