International Business Major at Pennsylvania State University Altoona

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

As the world shrinks, the demand for decision-makers versed in the culture and language of other countries grows. To fill this need, the Penn State Board of Trustees in 2001 approved creation of an International Business degree program at Penn State Erie.

International Business is a dual-degree program. The International Business curriculum emphasizes the knowledge and the skills required to accomplish organizational objectives while coordinating human, material, information, and financial resources across national boundaries. A second School of Business major adds depth of business knowledge (you can choose Accounting, Business Economics, Economics, Finance, Management, Management Information Systems, or Marketing). With careful planning, the program can be completed in four years.

A required study abroad component is distinct to the International Business major. Penn State offers 130 study programs in forty-two countries-from Aberystwyth, Wales to Wellington, New Zealand-through a variety of organizations. Programs vary in length from spring break to a full year abroad. An international programs adviser is available to help students make the selection that best meets their educational needs.

This past summer, a study abroad opportunity to China was available. Dr. Kenneth Louie was the Instructor. The Study Abroad flyer tells you about what students learned and estimated costs. The Study Abroad brochure gives you a course overview, deadlines, and how this course will increase your understanding of China and its impact on the world and its economy.

International Business Management Degree at Luther College

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Students with a desire to enter the business field typically major in economics, accounting, management, or management information systems (MIS). Luther’s economics and business department, which directs all four majors, has a distinguished reputation with employers and graduate schools alike.

It is the department’s goal to educate its students beyond their first position after graduation. The high initial placement record of our graduates and the leadership positions in business held by our alumni underscore the quality preparation Luther students receive.

Luther College is a member of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB).
The Program’s Flexibility

Given the range and flexibility of the Luther curriculum, it is possible to pursue majors in more than one field. In recent years, students have combined accounting with economics, economics with mathematics, management with foreign languages, music with management, accounting with management information systems, and management with psychology.

Recognizing the need for a combination of academic skills in some career fields, the faculty has established certificate programs for joint study in two or more departments. These include international management, art management, music management, theatre management, and sports/recreation management.
Economics and Business Coursework

A core of courses is required as preliminary work for any of the department’s four majors (economics, accounting, management, or MIS). This coursework includes Principles of Economics, Statistics, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, an appropriate mathematics course, and Concepts and Issues in Computing. After meeting these core requirements, each student chooses advanced courses from among the four major areas.

Luther offers some unique courses to augment its core offerings:
Management and Accounting for Nonprofit Organizations
Entrepreneurship
Environmental Economics
International Business Management
Management Information Systems
Health Care Management

All Business students begin their studies with introductory courses in economics, accounting, business law, statistics and computers. Students then choose from among a number of different concentrations: accounting, financial institutions, nonprofit organizations, or a combination of courses approved by their advisor.

Accounting
Possible courses for the concentration include:
Intermediate Accounting
CPA Problems/Cases
Federal Income Tax
Auditing

Finance
Possible courses include:
Money and Banking
Business Finance
Investments
Practicum

Nonprofit Organizations
Possible courses include:
Law and Taxation of Nonprofit Organizations
Fundraising
Structure of the Jewish Community

Educational Opportunities

In addition to the courses offered in the undergraduate Business Department, juniors and seniors are encouraged to take courses in American Jewish University’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program in nonprofit management. Recommended MBA courses for undergraduate students include: Management Information Systems; Strategic Marketing and Public Relations; Human Resources Management; Fundraising; and Management Concept of Budgeting and Financial Controls.

American Jewish University also offers a five-year BA/MBA degree, whereby students who enter the university as Business majors can, in consultation with their advisor, focus their curriculum so that by their junior year they can take MBA courses in AJU’s nonprofit graduate program. They could then finish both a BA in Business and an MBA in nonprofit administration in five years.

For students interested in careers in public law, international business and finance, public policy or foreign policy, AJU offers a joint Business/Political Science major.

Educational Approach

American Jewish University business courses combine theoretical study with hands-on work. Students in “Developing a Business Plan”, for example, research different aspects of a project and develop a concrete business plan for it, and during the Spring 1992 semester, Business majors wrote a business plan for a new AJU bookstore, researching other campus service organizations, surveying AJU students as to their needs, meeting with AJU faculty, administrators, etc. Small classes encourage active participation and discussion.

Small classes also mean that students are actively involved in their own education. Instead of sitting in a large lecture hall and taking notes, AJU students are encouraged through research projects and other relevant experiences, to develop their own thinking.

Internships And Career Opportunities

The Business Department encourages students to learn first-hand about a career during their college years. “The Service Sector” course, for example, regularly brings guest lecturers to campus to describe career possibilities for students with a business background.

Internships are also encouraged. Many AJU students take advantage of the dynamic, economically diverse city of Los Angeles for internships in businesses and non-profit organizations.

Students graduating from AJU have gone on to law school, business school, and work in a variety of fields. Graduates have found that the small-class experience at AJU gave them increased confidence in competitive graduate schools. They also discover that the relationships they develop with their professors serve them well, as their recommendations and references are written by professors who have worked closely with them and know their specific strengths.

Faculty

The Business faculty is directed by Professor Stephen Schuster, Ph.D. who brings broad professional experience to his classes.
