The Specialization in International Business at the University of North responds to the need to confront the new challenges of the twenty-first century managerial, professional and highly qualified executives to understand, interact and exploit the business opportunities offered by the new globalized world.
Businesses today need to develop new markets, learn from their competitors and consumers (local and international) and use all their capacities to the fullest. This requires new skills and abilities and a new management approach in the context of international business.

Graduates of specialization have the opportunity to attend an extra year to qualify for the title of Master of Business Administration (MBA Professional). After this additional year of study can advance studies of Master in International Business at Florida International University, USA, under an international cooperation agreement signed between the University of North and The Chapman Graduate School of Business at Florida International University (FIU).

The MBA Programme, in the 2 years duration, runs 48 units of core courses, 18 units of elective courses in the areas of specialisation and 6 units for final year’s project. Students are required to register for a minimum of 18 credit units per semester. The minimum number of credit required to graduate is 72. Master of Business Administration

The duration of the degree
2.5 years. Scope of studies: 90 credits, including 30 credits from thesis. The degree provides the same level of competence for public office and commercial positions as Master’s degrees achieved from universities.

The degree programme is taught in English.

Workplace-oriented studies in line with the personal study plan
Students of the Degree Programme in International Business Management graduate as Masters of Business Administration. The curriculum is workplace-oriented and studies are organised in line with each student’s personal study plan.

The aim is that graduates will
- be able to start up and manage processes related to international business and marketing
- know how to apply the principles of project management and develop a company’s strategic planning and implementation
- be familiar with the special characteristics of trade and business with Russia

Graduates of the Master of Business Administration can work as
- project managers for companies’ development initiatives,
- planners and managers in international trade,
- independent entrepreneurs, etc.

Practical know-how in trade with Russia
The degree focuses on high-level know-how in international trade, and particularly on Russia-related business, marketing and leadership skills.

Fluency in English is essential for all students. The degree can include advanced studies in Russian.

Development project to solve practical problems
The degree includes a thesis, carried out as a development project related to current issues and problems in industry, commerce or individual companies. Students should select topics that are closely linked to their work. Development projects are carried out throughout the studies, starting in the early stages of the degree.

Studying while working
The Master’s degree takes approximately 2.5 years to complete. Most courses are organised in the evenings and on weekends. Some are organised as virtual studies online, so they can be completed at any suitable time and place. The master degree programme is planned the way that the students should be employeed here in Finland. Lectures are only appr. once a month and most of the projects are to be done concerning ones own work.

Studies at the St. Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance
Some of the studies belonging to the degree can be completed at the St. Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance. In addition, South Karelia University of Applied Sciences invites visiting experts from the St. Petersburg institution to teach students about trade between Russia and the EU. They can also contribute their expertise to the development projects conducted as part of the degree.

Work experience required
To qualify for the degree, applicants must have Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science (Technology), Bachelor of Hospitality Management or a similar applied higher education degree, plus at least three years’ work experience after graduation.

Those who have completed college-level or vocational qualifications and gone on to take applied higher education degrees may be accepted as applicants if they have three years’ work experience with at least one year after the completion of their higher education degree.

Applications for the Degree Programme in International Business Management should be sent directly to South Karelia University of Applied Sciences. There are 13 starting places each year.
